MOVING DAY CHECKLIST
2 WEEKS PRIOR . . .
1. Contact utility companies to confirm specific dates for
discontinuation of services such as telephone, internet, cell
phones, electric, gas, cable, water, propane and/or oil deliveries.
2. Contact new utility companies and arrange for service
to begin at closing date.
3. Discontinue delivery services (newspaper, laundry, trash)
4. Clean out lockers at school, health clubs, church, etc.
5. Obtain needed information for new driver’s license
and auto registration documents.
6. Obtain new insurance policies for new location. Provide
change of address information for existing policies.
7. Possible discontinuation of lawn service, does buyer want
to continue?
8. Possible discontinuation of security alarm service, does
buyer want to continue?
9. Empty contents of safety deposit boxes. Place valuables
that you will be carrying with you in a safe location. Do
not ship valuables.
10. Dispose of combustible items. You cannot ship aerosol
cans or flammable materials.
11. Obtain records and referrals for doctors, dentists and
veterinarians. Have referrals made for all prescription medications.
12. Confirm children are registered for school, be sure and
have all school transfer information and medical records as
required.
13. Have new checking and savings accounts opened, arrange
for transfer of funds.
14. Redirect any future direct deposits or automatic withdrawals
from checking and savings accounts.
15. Use up your frozen food.
16. Notify post office of your change of address.
17. Arrange for refund of security deposits (rental or utility
companies).
MOVING DAY CHECKLIST
1 WEEK PRIOR . . .
1. If you do not own a cell phone, keep your home telephone
connected until one day after the move date, you may need
it the day of the move.
2. Drain oil and gas from lawn equipment. Empty containers
for gas grills.
3. Make sure you have not left clothing at the dry cleaners.
4. If driving your personal car, have the car serviced and
the oil changed prior to leaving.
5. Pack a “special box” of pillows, linens, and
personal care items to have available your first night in
your new home.
6. Pack a “tool box” with hammer, nails, screwdrivers,
measuring tape, etc.
7. Pack a “kids box” with items they will need
when reaching your new home.
8. Gather any extra keys and garage door openers for the
property. You will need to bring these to closing.
9. Clean out and defrost the refrigerator at least 24 hours
before move.
10. Verify if lawn service and alarm system service should
be discontinued.
11. Send thank you notes to special people, i.e., teachers,
pastors, club members.
12. Donate “left over” items to charity.
MOVING DAY CHECKLIST
DAY OF THE MOVE . . .
1. Search every room before the moving van leaves the premises.
2. Contact utility companies one more time to confirm start
dates at your new home.
3. If utilizing a van line, obtain the driver’s name
and contact information, including in-transit phone numbers.
4. Turn off the water heater. Set the thermostat to 55 degrees
in the winter, 77 degrees in the summer.
5. Load any items (valuables) into your car that are not
going on the van.
6. If moving long distance, confirm your travel arrangements
including hotel reservations.
7. Verify the postal service has your forwarding address
for mail.
8. Clearly mark any boxes you will need immediately upon
arrival. They will all look the same at the new destination.
